Wedding Memories (long overdue)

This has taken me much longer than I expected to write. I often get overwhelmed by the enormity of a task and put it off for a while, and that is what has happened here.

I have not yet scanned all my polaroids, so expect another post with pictures of things I'm going to talk about today.

The wedding weekend started out well.

Friday I had off of work and I still had many errands to run for the wedding, so I had Adam's car for the day. I took Katie, one of my bridesmaids, to the salon so she could get her hair cut, and then sat down myself for my test updo. I really liked the style Nina, my stylist, came up with and wore my hair in the veil and crown for the most of the rest of the day. After leaving there, we went to pick up our dresses from Davids and put them in Katie's closet. She then went to the movies with her friends, and I went up to El Segundo to fill out my timecard, which I'd forgotten to do. On the way, I called a retailer in Torrance to inquire about an instant photo guest book I'd seen online, confirmed they had it, and told them I was coming by to pick it up. They said that no, they didn't have a customer facility and were an online only store, which was weird because the website i saw them on gave their phone number and address. They said they'd do me a one time favor and let me pick it up, but i'd have to buy the book online first before coming in, and pay the shipping. Sigh. But whatever. While I was at the office I made the online purchase and headed down there to pick up the book. Yay! Running out of time, and money, I went home to get ready for dinner at Islands, which replaced our Haunted Queen Mary tour since we didn't get the turnout we wanted. Oh well. Islands was lots of fun. Adam's parents, his paternal grandparents, his brother, sister, and her boyfriend were there, as well as adam and me and katie, Rob, and Jim. Toni, the manager who is my good friend, kept coming by and giving us stuff, like free chips and stuff and a shot for me. I was nice and drunk before everyone got there :)

Adam having fun

Katie's really not drunk, honest

I gave the camera to Katie to take a better picture of my side of the table, and when I got it back I saw Curtis (adam's brother center frame) and that was the first I knew Curt was there...

Snuck another picture of Jim :)

Saturday was a bit of a disappointment, at least at first. My sister Kate was coming into town and we had a lunch and some other stuff planned for the bridesmaids. She was supposed to come over around Noon so we could head out, but due to my dad being my dad and some miscommunications, she never showed up. Also Katie, my friend, cancelled too. Erica, Adam's sister, showed up on time and was very nice to help clean up our disaster of a home while waiting on other people. My dad came over a bit later and helped us finish up, and of course now we cant find anything :) but the living room, dining, and kitchen are clean, and the study is at least neatly stacked. My sister and Katie did show up about an hour before the shower was due to start, and we had coffee and visited for a while. We all got to play with Kylee, my niece, who is just over a year old and still unbearably adorable. I have some polaroids of that, so I'll share them later. Then, it was time for the shower so we headed over to our condo's rec room where Elisa and Tiffany had put together a fantastic tea party shower for me :) It was so much fun, and there were wonderful little sandwiches and tasty things to eat. There were games and presents and happy stories. I really enjoyed it so much. After the shower I invited everyone to go to karaoke for my bachelorette party. I went back to my house and got dressed in the red dress I bought for the Giovanni event in Vegas, kept the "Bride to Be" crown Elisa and Tiff had given me for the shower, and headed over to the Liquid Lounge. Only nyteknight and tea_and_thunder showed up, and only I, out of our small group, sang at all, but it ended up being a blast. I'm so glad Megan and Leigh shared that with me (THANKS GUYS)!

Sunday morning was church at St. Bartholomew's in Long Beach. Everyone was there pretty much on time, and the service was nice. I don't really remember the focus of the homily, but I know I teared up during it. The thing is, I clearly remember being confused as to why I was crying - the priest's words hadn't affected me in that way. Later, after Mass was ended, I found out that my sister and Erica both had the same experience. Weird. Between Mass and our "Pre-Reception" party at Cha Cha's, I got the bridesmaids together and we went to the nail salon to get our nails done (which we were supposed to have done on Saturday but the plans had been changed). It was fun, and afterwards we went back to get ready for the afternoon shindig at Cha Chas. Of all the wedding weekend plans, I was worried about this event the most, since planning the party had been an exercise in frustration and a comedy resulting from lack of communication on all sides. I'd only gotten a call that morning to let me know that Cha Cha's was ready to go for us. Up until that point I wasn't sure wht to expect when we got there. I shouldn't have worried. Cha Cha's was perfect. The food was excellent, the crowd was pleasant, everyone was having fun, and they were selling drinks like there was no tomorrow. I took only Polaroids at this event, and the light was perfect. I am very happy with how these turned out, and will be posting them soon. We wanted to wrap this up pretty early since everyone had to meet at the cruise dock early and already be dressed before they arrived, so we started collecting up the gifts and trying to load them all in Adam's car. We managed, but only just barely. Adam's grandfather surprised us with a special gift before we left, and we each gave our dads a special father's day present too. It was very nice, very fun, and well worth all the effort put into planning it.

Adam and I went home to finish packing and gathering everything we'd need for the wedding and cruise. I was going to The Renaissance Hotel to a room I was sharing with the bridesmaids and wouldn't be back in the morning. After some time I finally went to the hotel, and we got checked in, and we headed up to the room. The porter was pretty much the only person on staff to run errands, and so he went to go get a toothbrush for Erica since she'd left hers at home. We were staying on the Club level of the hotel, which had special access to a room with free drinks and breakfast and stuff in the morning, so we snuck in there with our room keys and raided the fridge. When we got back to the room, we realized there had been a malfunction with our door. The bar latch at the top of the hotel room door hand bounced closed a bit, snagging the door, and even though the keylock opened, the door wouldnt budge. So there we were, in the hallway at midnight surrounded by the spoils of our somewhat illicit trip to the snackroom, locked out of the room. The room that contained all of the stuff we needed for the wedding, including all our dresses. I couldn't imagine how we could get that door open, but my sister made a call to the front desk to explain our dilemma. They said they'd send an engineer to help us, and we waited and waited and got kinda silly in the hall. Kate being Kate decided to try the door again, and swung her hip against it with some large amount of force.... and the door popped open! Kate flew into the room in a cartoonish kind of way but was fine. We cheered and went inside and I called the front desk to let them know we were cool, and the porter showed up a few minutes later with a bag of goodies he'd procured for us. This was just a selection of all the complimentary travel items they provide when you forget stuff, but it was fun anyway. He hung out in the room at our behest as we chatted and giggled and enjoyed our snacks and drinks, until finally he had to go. Then we stayed up a while later talking about all manner of unseemly and unladylike things before we put the lights out and went to sleep.

In the morning, Nina came to the room and did Katie's hair and mine for the wedding. Collecting our things, we headed to the dock to await our turn to board the ship. We'd be first, so we had to be early. I managed to get a bit sunburned out there which was not that awesome, but finally we got on the ship and Adam and I were given our stateroom and he then left to go hang out with everyone else while Erica and Katie helped me get dressed. When I was done, I still had an hour before the wedding. I sent the girls away and waited in the room alone. Erica came back a while later with a shot of coconut rum from her parents "to help calm my nerves" and then after a while she left again. My dad came to see me not too long after that, and I finally got him to go back so he wouldnt miss the rehearsal (which I couldn't be part of). He and the wedding coordinator came down not too long after that to escort me to the Normandie room where the wedding would take place.

This was the first I had seen the room, and I peeked in to watch the last of the processional (my sister and my niece) head up to the stage. The room was amazing. Huge, beautiful, but with 2 sets of stairs for me to navigate to get to my groom. *sigh* The wedding march started and my dad took my arm and we made our way down and then up again to the stage. The wedding was lovely.

Adam was nervous but beautiful, and we got through it without any flubs or mistakes or fainting spells. When it was over, we made our exit, but then hung back for family pictures.

Everyone else went to the Queen Mary Lounge on the other end of the ship to get the reception started.

The reception was much nicer, although still short, than I thought it would be. The buffet was wonderful, the ice sculpture was lovely, the pianist was awesome, the cake was beautiful and tasty, and we got to use the fairy toasting flutes I was given by my friend jennifer at the shower.

It was really short, so there wasn't time for me to talk to everyone, but it was nice. Adam and I had a first dance to a piano version of Unforgettable.

The pianist I guess was going to let it go on as long as we wanted it to, and since I wasn't paying attention to him, that was a really long time. I finally gave him a glare and he brought it to a close. It was nice.

Then it was time for everyone to leave. I was tired, my feet hurt, and I was ready to be out of my dress, but there were more pictures to be taken. There were posed shots in a studio, and then pictures at different places around the ship. Fun, but also grumpy.

The best part about going back to the room other than the promise of getting out of my dress and into some more normal clothes was that the housekeeping lead for our hallway greeted us when we approached and let us into our room with his key, introducing himself as Darwin and being very nice. There was a fruit basket in the room from Jerry and a bottle of champagne. Adam helped me get dressed into something more comfortable, and we went to see the ship. There was an emergency drill just before we left the dock and then we had our formal dinner in the Elation dining room at 6. One of our waiters had been at the reception so he was very kind and deferential to us. His name was Francisco, and his assistant was a man named Ma. We were alone at that meal, which was kind of nice but also a bit disappointing. We'd heard good news, though, that Tim and Elisa were able to get a last minute stateroom even though there had been some trouble with their reservation and we were unsure what was going on, so that was good.

The cruise was lovely. We were treated like royalty and crew and passengers alike recognized us throughout the trip as the bride and groom. Cruising is my new favorite vacation, and we plan to do much more of it.

I will go into more detail about our vacation in another post. This one has gone on much too long...

:)

My toe regained feeling somewhere in the middle of the night. I managed to fool it into thinking it was numb until I got up by wearing a thick sock booty thing that made my whole foot seem kinda numb, so I did not wake up in pain at all. Got up a bit late so didn't have time to do the foot soak or change the bandages until I got to work, which was fun. Had to try to hide the nastiness that is my toenail area from passersby in an open cubicle. But I managed. Now toe is happily concealed in a bandage, my foot is back in the surgery sandal and propped up on an extra chair. Fun fun. Now the next person who ends up walking past me is going to get me a bottle of water so I can take my meds. They just dont know it yet.

Fun times.

Death Cab for Cutie

I'm not sure how I missed this band. The first time I remember hearing their name or any of their music was last year.

Soul Meets Body

I want to live where soul meets body
And let the sun wrap its arms around me
And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel, feel what its like to be new

Cause in my head thereís a greyhound station
Where I send my thoughts to far off destinations
So they may have a chance of finding a place
where theyíre far more suited than here

And I cannot guess what we'll discover
When we turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels
But I know our filthy hands can wash one anotherís
And not one speck will remain

And I do believe itís true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too
So brown eyes I hold you near
Cause youíre the only song I want to hear
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

Where soul meets body
Where soul meets body
Where soul meets body

And I do believe itís true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too
So brown eyes I hold you near
Cause youíre the only song I want to hear
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

I will follow you into the dark

Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light
Or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark

If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
And illuminate the "No"s
On their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In catholic school
As vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised
By a lady in black
And I held my tongue
As she told me, "Son,
Fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
And illuminate the "No"s
On their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me
Have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes
Are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
But it's nothing to cry about
Because we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
And illuminate the "No"s
On their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark

I will possess your heart

How I wish you could see the potential
The potential of you and me
It's like a book elegantly bound
But in a language you can't read just yet

You got to spend some time, love
You got to spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart

You got to spend some time, love
You got to spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart

There are days when outside your window
I see my reflection as I slowly pass
And I long for this mirrored perspective
When we'll be lovers, lovers at last

You got to spend some time, love
You got to spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart

You got to spend some time, love
You got to spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart

I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart

You reject my advances and desperate pleas
I won't let you let me down so easily
So easily

You got to spend some time, love
You got to spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart

You got to spend some time, love
You got to spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love<br
Finalizing details

I just spoke to Bonnie, the lovely wedding coordinator at Carnival for the Long Beach port. She was very helpful at quickly summarizing our wedding day, the features of the wedding and shipboard reception (the reception will be nicer than I had been thinking it was, so that's nice), and generally grounding me in what still needs to be done.

That being said, here are a few of her helpful hints, to those of you who will be attending:

1. Again, you must be on the guest list to attend the wedding, and if you did not send in your response card or did not specifically work out your RSVP with me directly you are unfortunately not on the list. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me and I will check the list for you.

2. If you are on the list, you will need an official State/Government issued ID to be admitted. Please be sure you have your wallet/purse/ID with you when you arrive at the ship. Children under 17 years old will need their birth certificate, if they do not have an ID. I asked about expired ID cards, and she said this would be fine if you do not have your replacement yet.

3. Early check-in for SAILING GUESTS ONLY begins at 9:30AM at the Queen Mary (next to the Carnival dock). All others will check-in at the dome. Boarding the ship will happen around 11:30 (or as soon as the ship clears Customs). The earlier you arrive and check in, the better. Everyone MUST begin checking in by 11:00 AM at the LATEST in order to board before the actual wedding time.

4. The actual time of the wedding ceremony is 1:30 PM in the Normandy Lounge. There is a brief rehearsal starting at 1:10-ish in this same room. Everyone should be there, including attendants and the Groom, but unfortunately not me, the Bride. You do need to know the time and place of the wedding (though I'm told we are the only wedding on board the ship that day, so someone should be able to point out the correct lounge if you are on time for everything).

5. Reception to follow at 2:00pm in the Queen Mary Lounge in the back of the ship. Alcohol and appetizers will be served. Please eat a BIG BREAKFAST prior to arriving at the ship.

6. You must arrive dressed, with hair and makeup done, because there is nowhere to change your clothes and time constraints may leave little time between boarding and the ceremony time. Sailing guests' cabins may not be available prior to the ceremony.

7. If you are sailing with us, please remember not to check baggage or items you need for the ceremony as these will not be available to you before the ceremony.

8. Once on board, Non-Sailing guests may tour the ship if there is time, however you are not allowed in any of the shipboard restaurants, and you will not be able to purchase any drinks or food since the ship uses room keys as charge cards and cash is not accepted. You will have to wait until the 2:00 reception to eat or drink. If you suffer from bloodsugar issues, you may want to bring a small snack with you.

9. Please remember that wedding gifts may not be brought onboard due to taxes and Duty fees. Thank you for understanding.

I really appreciate that so many of our friends want to share our wedding day with us. We sincerely wish we could spend that day with everyone.

However, unfortunately due to the rules of the cruise ship where the wedding is taking place, a firm guest list with full names and birthdates of each guest was required over a week ago. This made RSVP'ing extremely important, a point I included in the invitation inserts when we sent the invites.

Unfortunately still, it is well past the point of changing or adding to the guestlist. If you did not RSVP in the positive and provide us with your birthdate, you are not on the guest list and cannot be admitted onto the cruise ship on Monday.

I am announcing this to attempt to avoid people showing up at the dock thinking they will be admitted because they were invited, when in fact we didn't know they wanted to come, so they weren't put on the list.

I am very very sorry to anyone that did not understand this earlier.

Please join us for one or more of our weekend activities, even if you cannot come to the wedding on monday.

Almost immediately I won a 20 dollar gift certificate to Amazon, which I used to buy a Transformer's tee shirt.

Because of that I started entering into other contests I would otherwise ignore, and won a Wii card worth 20 bucks in Wii points, which I gave to my friend Katie who could actually use it.

Since then, it's been quiet on the WinForMe front. I know I am entered into 50+ contests a month from reputable businesses, but although I check the email address I signed up with every day, I have stopped combing the list of sweeps because nothing has happened in a while.

Yesterday, however, I received the following message in my WinForMe inbox:

Subject: Islands - Pueblo Bonito Sweepstakes

Congratulations Kelly!!

You have won our Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Sweepstakes.

To redeem your prize of 5 days and 4 nights at Pueblo Bonito Oceanfront Resorts and Spa, Dinner at Siempre and Armonia Spa Package, please fill out the enclosed affidavit and either fax or mail back to me by Tuesday, June 17, 2008.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Amanda (last name removed)
Online Business coordinator
Lifestyles & Travel Business Group
Bonnier Corporation
(contact info removed)

This is the sweepstakes I've won: http://www.islands.com/contest.jsp?ID=368

Here's a link to the rules: http://www.islands.com/article.jsp?ID=21031586

I'd say this about makes up for the 50 or so bucks a year I pay for the WinForMe service...

Not too many artistic shots this time, mostly people.

People are cool, though.

P.S. On my way to work this morning I was rummaging around in my bag and dropped!! my polaroid camera on the train platform. It popped open on impact and skidded across the pavement... and a nice lady picked it up and handed it back. I took a test picture (the camera had 2 shots left in it) and the camera seemed to function ok, except it ejected both the remaining exposures at the same time. I could tell right away by brown spots around the edges of both that there was something wrong, but it seemed more a problem with the film than the camera. The top shot developed fairly normally except for the brown bits, and of course the second shot turned out black. I was apprehensive as I loaded a new cartridge of film into the camera, but the next shot I took came out beautifully.

Thank the gods. I'd be very very sad if I lost my camera. Especially with the protest coming up on Sunday.

Love polariods

I am having so much fun with my instant camera, and racking up quite a bill in instant film! I cant help it, it's a new addiction. :)

Anyway, a couple things about polaroids. They're more instant than digital. Both you see results moments after taking the photo, but you cant get a physical print of your digital without some amount of trouble on your part - either in front of a computer, or at a digital printing kiosk at the photo counter. Instant film develops automatically within minutes, the photo slowly coalescing on the page. Its neat.

Ostensibly, digital pictures are by nature infinitely reproducible and lend themselves very easily to manipulation. Instant photos, on the other hand, create only one copy and although some films allow for an emulsion transfer process that has interesting results, instant photos are really meant for one unique print per photo. It makes the process special, in some way that digital is not.

As a side note, scanning polaroids allows for the reproduction that digital offers, but it's definitely a weird feeling to have your unique photo suddenly become so prolific. It does actually feel like magic, again.

And it's completely unnatural to edit such a picture once it's digitized. I wouldn't be able to do it at all. I just seems so *wrong*
